A company called Volkswind has made a proposal to build a huge wind farm consisting of 8 massive wind turbines just outside the picturesque and unspoilt South Cambridgeshire village of Heydon. The proposed turbines will be some of the largest in the country at 126.5 metres (415ft) high; that is almost as tall as the London Eye, 25% taller than the radio mast at RAF Barkway and twice the height of Ely Cathedral's tower.
An industrial development on this scale will not just affect the village of Heydon; many other villages in the surrounding area will also be affected by these proposals if they were to go ahead. These villages, and Heydon itself, are considered to be some of the best preserved and most beautiful in the East Anglian region.
We are pro sustainable energy, but we believe that infrastructure on such a large and industrial scale needs to be sited appropriately if the unique character of our local countryside is to be preserved.
We also believe that at the heart of this wind power plant proposal is not an eco-conscious soul but simply a desire to make huge amounts of money from Government subsidies.
As well as this, there are several other reasons why we oppose the wind power plant, which are listed below.
- The turbines proposed are huge - they will tower over our villages and surrounding area and will be seen from 30km away
- The wind turbines will be sited too close to our homes - just 700 metres from the nearest houses
- There are growing concerns about the impact of wind turbines on the health of those living close by (wind turbine syndrome). Not enough research has been done into this.
- There is little evidence that the proposed wind turbines will have any real benefit in the fight against global warming
- There is evidence that wind turbines sighted inland are not efficient in producing electricity and should be sighted offshore
- The turbines will endanger the wildlife in the area - of particular concern are the rare species of bat and birds of prey recorded in this region (RSPB reserve at Fowlmere being in very close proximity)
- Our beautiful countryside and unique and historic views to Cambridgeshire will be lost forever
- The wind turbines will ravage an area that is steeped in history and an archaeological treasure trove
- It is likely that the value of our houses will plummet and become difficult to sell
- The proposed development could have a domino effect by "opening up" the surrounding area to further wind farm development
On this web site you can find out more about the proposals, and why we're against them.
